Mt. Vesuvius Yellow (Piennolo Del Vesuvio Giallo, GiaGiu) tomato

Mt. Vesuvius Yellow (Piennolo Del Vesuvio Giallo, GiaGiu) is an Italian heirloom tomato. This tomato produces delightful yellow cherry fruits that have a unique appearance, somewhat flattened and elongated, with a pointy tip at their blossom end. Fruits have a thick skin, with rich, great tasting flesh having high sugar and acid but with the rich flavour and low moisture content of roma tomatoes! They are traditionally picked and hung indoors, where they slowly ripen to full flavour over a period of several months (a great way to extend the season also).

This variety has a very interesting history because its a twin of the famous Piennolo del Vesuvio Giallo tomatoes grown on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius (Naples, Italy). Due to the fact that the name of Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes has the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) protected status, certifies that these tomatoes are grown in a limited area of the volcano that has a unique soil composition, exposure to the sun, and temperature differences due to the altitude. High in sulphur and other mineral content, the soil in this sun drenched part of southern Italy is vastly different from what is found in the valleys nearby, and you can really tell the difference in the tomatoes. Therefore this variety grown in other countries began to call Mt. Vesuvius Yellow.
